Description: Institute for the Study of Immigrant ReligionsLaunch Celebration
Our mission is to record, document, and archive the histories of immigrant religious communities: their establishment, challenges, ritual & spiritual life, and hopes for the future.
As an archival institute, our researchers conduct oral histories; collect historical documents, photographs, and other materials; and create digital archives for use by the public, researchers, and the religious communities themselves.
As a research institute, we seek to elaborate and expand upon methods and theories for studying urban religious communities in the US in the 21st century.
Through research, archival activities, and hosting professional conferences and workshops, we hope to position UC Riverside at the forefront of study in US urban immigrant religions.
ISIR seeks to chart the ever-evolving religious landscape, especially in respect to immigrant communities, in the Greater Los Angeles area.
We recruit, train, and deploy researchers specializing in this field from UC Riverside and surrounding areas to conduct research on and within communities including but not limited to American Hindus, Iranian Jews, Mexican-American Catholics, Latino Muslims, and Chinese-American Buddhists.
UC Riverside is uniquely positioned in this region, an area home to every major world religion. It is a region simultaneously home to novel expressions of hybrid religious identities and to transnational religious practices spanning borders.
The University of California, Riverside is currently the only research university in the greater Los Angeles area offering the PhD in the academic study of religion.
