Description:

KUCR 88.3fm continues its series of cutting-edge “Comedy Apocalypse” shows at The Barn with a new “2012 ELECTION YEAR POLITICAL FACE-MELT edition,” featuring four critically acclaimed performers.  Three are well established comics at the top of their game and one is a rising star getting a buzz in the comedy circuit. The “Comedy Apocalypse” show, always held near the end of the academic quarter, is scheduled for Wednesday, May 23rd, 8:30pm, at UC Riverside’s Barn.  This is a special End-of-the-School Year Ultra-Mega 4-comic-loaded-to-the-gills version of the show.

This edition of the “Comedy Apocalypse” has a bit of an election focus in headliner Jimmy Dore’s “Left, Right and Ridiculous” show, but most of Wednesday night’s show is great comedy club-type fare, with stand-up sets from three well-established comics and one rising star.  The range of perspective and variety of comic styles is unusual and promises a very memorable evening.

JIMMY DORE, topping the bill, is a frequent guest on late-night television on shows such as Jimmy Kimmel Live,  Make Me Laugh, The Late Late Show on CBS, and NBCs Late Friday. He has also performed at the Montreal Comedy Festival, the HBO U.S. Comedy Arts Festival Aspen, CO, The Melbourne Comedy in Australia, The Amsterdam Comedy Festival, and for the USO, entertaining U.S. troops in Afghanistan. He’s a regular commentator on Current TV’s The Young Turks (also on TYT’s wildly popular webcast) and he hosts a weekly radio show heard Fridays at on KPFK 90.7fm Los Angeles and nationwide on the Pacifica Radio Network. His one-hour Comedy Central special “Citizen Jimmy” was chosen Best of the Year by iTunes and named as one of the Top 5 Comedy DVD’s by Punchline Magazine.  A Will Rogers for the 21st Century, he is originally from Chicago and one of 12 children in a Catholic family.  Jimmy’s “everyman” comic style appeals broadly as he comments on life in the America today, along with political satire and comedy that can be reminiscent of John Stewart and Stephen Colbert, but in a voice all his own.  He also appears regularly at comedy clubs and festivals across the country.  At the BARN/KUCR Comedy Apocalypse 5, Dore’s will perform his critically-acclaimed show “LEFT, RIGHT and RIDICULOUS,” (formerly “Pop and Politics”) as seen at the famous Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theater in Hollywood.  The show combines stand-up, video, sketch comedy and audience interaction to intensely hilarious effect.  He has many videos online posted on YouTube and elsewhere.

PAUL GILMARTIN is a stand-up comedian  dozens of television appearances, including NBC's Late Friday, CBS' The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, and his own half-hour Comedy Central Presents: Paul Gilmartin.  He has been a guest on Bill Maher’s show and has been a writer for the Emmy Awards and famed comic Dennis Miller (Saturday Night Live, HBO, Fox News). He has performed as a stand-up and a sketch actor at the Montreal Comedy Festival, and three times at the Aspen Comedy festival, most recently as his character, Republican Representative Richard Martin, who spreads hope to suburban couples having trouble affording a second home.  He can currently be seen co-hosting movies and cooking every Friday night on TBS' Dinner and a Movie, which he has been doing since 1995.  Before becoming a stand-up comedian, he appeared in numerous plays in the Chicago theater scene, and studied at the famed Second City Theater. Gilmartin is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Indiana University at Bloomington, with a BA in theater and drama.  Gilmartin’s videos are available on YouTube and elsewhere.

BOBBY MIYAMOTO is a stand-up comedian who has made appearances on Comedy Central, CBS’s Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Comics Unleashed and many others. He has also been featured on the Animal Planet, TBS and TruTv.  Bobby grew up in Boise, Idaho. He began his career writing comedy for Premiere Radio Networks where he wrote comedy for radio stations all around the country. Now he performs at clubs and colleges for all types of crowds.  Other TV appearances include ImaginAsian’s Comedy Zen, AZN’s Asia Street Comedy, NBC’s Last Comic Standing and Red Eye. He also performed internationally on the popular Dutch stand-up TV show The Comedy Factory.  Bobby’s videos are widely available.

OMAR NAVA is a stand-up comedian, writer and performer now based in Hollywood, but originally from El Paso, TX.  A graduate of Rice University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, he decided that mankind needed more comedy and fewer machines.  He moved to Los Angeles in 2010 and has since performed regularly at many notable clubs around Hollywood including The Hollywood ImprovThe Comedy Store.  He won first runner up in the Last Laff Standing Comedy Competition (2010), and was a finalist in The Inland Empire Comedy Contest (2011).  Omar is a writer for the sketch group Ant Farm Recess which can be found on YouTube.  His travels throughout the country and "ethnically ambiguous" look have shaped his comic voice and given him a unique perspective.  Nava hopes one day to combine his interests in engineering and comedy by creating the ultimate “comedy machine,” which would benevolently rule the planet, directing the fate of nations with clever puns and smart alec quipping.  Omar is the MC of KUCR’s Comedy Apocalypse V.
