Holiday Choral Concert

UCR Chamber Singers, conducted by Ruth Charloff
UCR Choral Society, conducted by G. Edward Bruner

This annual concert offers Nativity songs and two vivid choral Masses.  The expressive Mass for Four Voices by Renaissance master William Byrd, whose music was caught between his private Catholicism and public Protestantism amid the dangerous religious politics of Elizabethan England, shares the program with Joseph Haydn’s beloved Missa Brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo, also known as the Little Organ Mass. Haydn composed his Mass in honor of St. John of Cuidad, the 15th-century Portuguese monk who founded the Brothers of Mercy, an order known for its medical skill and its belief in the healing power of music. In honor of St. John’s Portuguese roots, the Choral Society will also perform music by the great Portuguese Baroque composer José António Carlos de Seixas.  Also on the program is Nativity music for chorus by Vaughan Williams, Hassler, Praetorius, and UCR composers Donald Johns and Abraham Fabella.

Guest artists include:
Susan Judy, soprano    Christen Herman, alto    Sean McDermott, tenor    Norman Goss, bass
Frances Moore, violin    Gregory Maldonado, violin    Gail Sharpsteen, cello
Abraham Fabella, organ
