Electroacoustic Music by Mary Lou Newmark
Mary Lou Newmark, electric violinist, composer and poet will perform her music and discuss her compositional methods.  As an artist of both music and words, Newmark continues to expand her creativity to include works for theater that combine the performing arts to explore social issues.

Mary Lou Newmark holds Master’s degrees in both violin performance (USC) and music composition (UCLA). She has received numerous awards as a performer and composer, including the 2009 Bettylou Scandling Hubin Award in Music Technology, 2004 Herb Alpert Foundation’s Alpert Award in the Arts for Music nomination, American Composers Forum Grant for her electric violin concerto, “Canto de Luz,” and a residency at the Atlantic Center for the Arts.

In 2006, her multimedia work concerning the homeless, “Street Angel Diaries” premiered in a new theatrical production at the Theater@Boston Court in Pasadena, California. The Los Angeles Times’ Philip Brandes hailed the work as having a “haunting score." He described Ms. Newmark’s performance as "modernistic musical sketches on her neon-lit electric violin -- picture Laurie Anderson on a good hair day, but aiming more at emotions than intellect."

“Breath of Trees, ” Ms. Newmark’s full-length hybrid theatrical work, premiered in two workshop performances in November 2011 at ARC Pasadena. “Breath of Trees” weaves live music, poetry, storytelling, humor, science, and dance into a tapestry that explores the relationship between contemporary society and nature. Mary Lou as writer/composer joined the cast on stage, performing on electric violin, percussion and providing sound design.

Her current project is the second in a trilogy about the natural world. “Breathing Room” is a chamber symphony for two actors and a musician in four acts.

Ms. Newmark’s works have been performed at international festivals in Corfu, Greece and Montreal, Canada, and have been featured on radio stations throughout the United States, in Canada, and around the world.
