Fauré: Requiem
Milhaud: Creation of the World

Fauré’s beautiful Requiem is featured in a concert about transitions—both out of life and into it—and different views of the hereafter.

The Requiem for chorus and orchestra ushers the departed to a merciful, serene heaven, while a set of African-American spirituals look toward the freedom, joy and release to come, and Steve Heitzeg's Elegy on Water considers an essential life force with no personal afterlife. The concert also includes moving songs about losing a loved one, with music by Norman Dello Joio and by Ysaye Barnwell of the African-American a cappella group Sweet Honey in the Rock.

Specially featured is a French masterpiece to complement Fauré's: Darius Milhaud’s Création du Monde (Creation of the World), the jazzy ballet score from 1923, based on African folk mythology of the coming of life. Milhaud composed the ballet amid the excitement of “Le Jazz Hot” in Paris, just a year after his first impressed visit to the U.S. and Harlem.
