Description:

Religion & Studying Religion in China
after the Cultural Revolution

Dr. Chuang Tong Lee, Lanzhou University, PRC.

The Cultural Revolution had a huge impact on China, but little is known about how it affected religion, other than warring against it. Nor, is much known in the West about how universities have adapted to the revulsion at the excesses of the Cultural Revolution. Dr. Lee lived both through the Cultural Revolution as well as reactions to it in the new China. He will share his experiences and knowledge about how religion regarded in what is officially still a Marxist state. As well, he is well positioned as a university professor in Lanzhou to share his views about what religious trends have developed in the past decades, as China has liberalized. And, he will have much to say about how this liberalization opened universities to the study of China’s many religions.
