DEPARTMENT OF DANCE

There’s You & There’s Me
Created and performed by Monica Rodero and Dan Schuchart
MFA candidates in Experimental Choreography

There’s You & There’s Me is the new, evening-length dance concert by collaborative choreographers Monica Rodero and Dan Schuchart. This creative pair weave, layer, and shift their way through a lively dialogue between people, projections, movement, and music. With a flurry of tightly constructed duets and improvisational scores the duo create swift exchanges between performers, audience, and text. Performed to the music of critically acclaimed NYC ensemble Victoire, this new dance work tumbles forward while falling back on itself, unfolding a rich visual field and vibrant rewriting of perception and expectation.

Monica Rodero received a BFA in Dance from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and is now pursuing an MFA degree in Experimental Choreography at the University of California-Riverside. While at UCR, Rodero has been the proud recipient of the Chancellor’s Distinguished Fellowship Award, the Gluck Fellowship of the Arts Award, and a BYPED Travel Grant. Rodero began her professional career with Wild Space Dance Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she performed, collaborated, choreographed and taught under the title of Associate Artistic Director. She frequently works as an independent choreographer and performer and has pursued producing and presenting her own work including independent, evening length dance concerts and interactive multimedia gallery events. Working in frequent collaboration with Daniel Schuchart, their choreography has been presented by: the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, University of California-Riverside, Wild Space Dance Company, Your Mother Dances, Danceworks Inc., Kunzelmann-Esser Loft Galleries of Milwaukee, the Minnesota Fringe Festival, IndyFringe Festival, Project 418 in Santa Cruz, California, Saint Mark's Church in New York City, and in Washington State by the Cody Rivers Show. With an emphasis in dance, yoga and other movement disciplines, Rodero has over ten years of teaching experience through UW-Milwaukee, Lawrence University, UC-Riverside, Milwaukee Public Schools, YMCA, Danceworks Inc. and Wild Space Dance Company.

Daniel Schuchart is in his second year as an MFA candidate in Experimental Choreography. He is a recipient of the 2012-13 Dissertation Year Program Fellowship. Dan earned Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee's Peck School of the Arts in both Dance and Painting/Drawing and has since worked professionally in both fields.  For the past ten years, Dan has worked with Wild Space Dance Company as a company member, choreographer and recently as Associate Artistic Director.  He has actively pursued creating and producing work in collaboration with Monica Rodero, including several independent dance concerts and curating interactive, multimedia gallery events.  Working collaboratively, their choreography has been presented extensively throughout the Midwest as well as in California, NYC and Seattle. Dan has taught dance and movement studies at Lawrence University, University of California--Riverside, and been a guest teacher at UW-Milwaukee, Milwaukee Ballet, American College Dance Festival and public school outreach programs.  His interests in dance include collaborative creative process, dance-theatre, improvisation, and contact improvisation. Outside of dance, Dan has worked as a scenic painter including the movie Public Enemies, scenic charge for Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, and productions for Skylight Opera Theatre.

There’s You & There’s Me is presented by the University of California, Riverside, Department of Dance.  Monica Rodero and Dan Schuchart and created this work in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Fine Arts degree in Experimental Choreography.
