Description:

ABSTRACT: Professor Catherine Sandoval, a tenured professor at Santa Clara University School of Law, will discuss her research and regulatory work as a pioneer in the field of the Water/Energy/Communications Nexus. During her six-year term as a Commissioner of the California Public Utilities Commission from January 2011-2017, she led efforts to expand
communications access, reliability, and affordability, increase energy access and safety, and improve water resource management and sustainability. Communications-enabled technologies can deploy energy in new cost-effective ways, promote electric grid stability, help avoid blackouts, and enable sustainable water use practices. Professor Sandoval will discuss her research on communications and energy access gaps in California, and the central role of communications technology and policy to the management of energy and water resources. Addressing these gaps is critical to reducing greenhouse gases, public safety, economic development, and equity.
