UCR Orchestra Family Concert:
Celebration of Hans Christian Andersen
With the UCR Chamber Singers
Ruth Charloff, conductor

Join us for a free concert celebrating Scandinavian master storyteller Hans Christian Andersen and his wide-ranging influence. Andersen gave us The Emperor’s New Clothes, Thumbelina, The Ugly Duckling, The Nightingale, and many more tales. His stories have inspired plays, ballets, films and animations and hit Disney movies. The concert includes the world premiere of Tim Labor’s The Little Match Girl for orchestra and narrator, orchestral music used by Balanchine for The Steadfast Tin Soldier by Bizet, music from Frozen, songs from The Little Mermaid, the lovely Inch Worm and The Ugly Duckling – plus a film visit from the late, great Danny Kaye, who played Andersen on film. We are honored to welcome as our narrator the wonderful actor and director Martha Demson.  Don’t miss it!
Guest narrator Martha Demson is Artistic Director of the Open Fist Theatre Company in Los Angeles. As a director and/or producer, her credits include Papa, Hughie, multi-award winning Cosmonaut's Last Message to the Woman He Once Loved in the Former Soviet Union, and How To Explain the History of Communism to Mental Patients (including NYC and Edinburgh Fringe). As an actor, she has been acclaimed for roles in The Dead, The Abdication, The Wooden Breeks, and The Black Glass.  She has received four LA Weekly Theatre Awards and 7 Drama-Logue/Garland Awards. Ms. Demson received her principal theatrical education from Yale University and Sanford Meisner.

The concert will be performed in the 500-seat University Theatre on the UCR campus, and is free and open to the public.

Ruth Charloff is conductor of the UCR Orchestra and UCR Chamber Singers, and is also associate conductor of the Claremont Symphony Orchestra. Creator of the UCR Orchestra's Family Concert series and other educational outreach projects, she also brought the program “Orchestral Expeditions” to many elementary schools in the Riverside area as a Gluck Fellow of the Arts.
