Fairy Tales
A Celebration of Hans Christian Andersen
with guest artist Martha Demson, narrator

This family-friendly free concert celebrates the Scandinavian master storyteller Hans Christian Andersen.

The concert includes the world premiere of The Little Match Girl for orchestra and narrator by Tim Labor, Professor of Music at UCR;  music from the popular Disney movies Frozen and The Little Mermaid; the songs "Inch Worm" and "Ugly Duckling" by Frank Loesser; and a vivid suite for orchestra by Georges Bizet to tell the story of The Steadfast Tin Soldier. There will also be a film visit from the late, great comic genius, Danny Kaye, who played Andersen on film. 

Martha Demson will be guest narrator. Demson is the artistic director of the Open Fist Theatre Company in Los Angeles. As a director and producer, her credits include PapaHughieCosmonaut’s Last Message to the Woman He Once Loved in the Former Soviet Union, and How to Explain the History of Communism to Mental Patients. As an actress, she has had acclaimed roles in The DeadThe AbdicationThe Wooden Breeks, and The Black Glass. She has received four LA Weekly Theatre Awards and seven Drama-Logue Awards. Demson studied at Yale University and The Sanford Meisner Center for the Arts.

Ruth Charloff, director of the UCR Orchestra and UCR Chamber Singers, will conduct the concert. Creator of the UCR Orchestra’s Family Concert Series and other educational outreach projects, Charloff brought the program “Orchestral Expeditions” to many elementary schools in the Riverside area as a fellow of the UCR Gluck Fellows Program of the Arts.
