Description: Data compression and reliable communication in the presence of noise make modern information technology possible. The goal of this talk is to introduce Shannon's source coding theorem and noisy channel coding theorem. These remarkable theorems put precise limits on lossless compression and communication over a noisy channel. In the process, I will introduce fundamental concepts in information theory, for instance the notion of entropy, which find applications in statistics and physics, as well as in the study of PDEs.
