Improvised Dialogues II: Jazz Duo
Featuring Kevin Sliwoski and Dhiren Panikker

“You can be in unison, without being in unison”
                                                           -Ornette Coleman

Improvised Dialogues II continues our exploration of the jazz duo format. Without the backing of a rhythm section, time, form, and timbre become variable factors, whose absence generates heightened interaction. This also means the responsibility of the performance lands more heavily on both trombone and piano, as well as the intimacy between musicians. Employing this improvisatory “ethic of co-creation” (Fischlin, Heble, and Lipsitz 2013), we feature the work of Thelonius Monk, Ornette Coleman, and Oliver Nelson, as well as original compositions and re-envisioned standards.

Kevin Sliwoski is a trombonist and PhD candidate in ethnomusicology. His research interests include global jazz, sound studies, and the US Military in South East Asia.
Dhiren Panikker
is a pianist and PhD candidate in ethnomusicology whose dissertation explores brownness and the politics of interculturalism in contemporary jazz.
