Description: Compact quantum metric spaces are noncommutative analogues of the algebras of Lipschitz functions over metric spaces. They provide the natural framework to discuss questions of metric approximations in the sense of noncommutative extensions of the Gromov-Hausdorff distance. This talk will introduce the category of compact quantum metric spaces and provide various important examples upon which current research in noncommutative metric geometry focuses.
