In 1989 Robert Bartnik proposed a definition of quasilocal mass in general relativity. The Bartnikmass is known to enjoy several attractive properties but is not straightforward to evaluate. I will talk about a first-order estimate for a natural modification of Bartnik's definition applied to small perturbations of spheres in Euclidean space. In particular I will describe an application to the small-sphere limit in time-symmetric slices.
