Description:

When you do a search on Google, the rankings are not just based on how well a site matches your search terms, but on how "important" the site is, with the more important sites pushed upwards in the rankings. But how do you decide which sites are the important ones? More generally, given a network of nodes, how do you decide which nodes are the "central" ones?

I'll be discussing some of the math behind this. As it'll turn out, the linear algebra you learn in Math 31 is both surprisingly useful and surprisingly useless in various ways!
