“Violeta Parra and Margot Loyola: Representations of Gender and Memory in Chilean Traditional Music”
This presentation will explore the ways that 20th century Chilean folklorists and artists Violeta Parra and Margot Loyola are remembered today. Together, musicologist Lorena Valdebenito and ethnomusicologist Hannah Snavely show how the two musicians have been constructed as idealized figures within the Chilean national imagination, and the role of gender within such representations.
