About this Event
Stitching Songs and Myths Together encompasses three multimedia installations that are part of Rhapsody, Jimena Sarno’s current solo exhibition at MASS MoCA. Rhapsody documents on film a year-long process of learning how to weave, and gathers collaborators from the Global South to contribute objects, soundscapes, and films that emphasize living in just relation with all beings. Las Tres Gracias is an operatic installation that explores the Western myth of democracy and the cyclical nature of destruction and renewal within the context of imperialist violence. Life in the Forest, a film, sound and sculpture installation, narrativizes the normalization of contemporary forms of fascism. Questioning both the relevance of cultural production within a global context of extreme violence, fragmentation and destruction, and the limits of free speech, the works create networks of solidarity, redistribution of resources and knowledge-sharing, and are guided by the collective responsibility to rebuild and repair.
Jimena Sarno is an interdisciplinary artist and educator born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and living in Los Angeles. With a focus on the sensorial and affective experiences shaped by political subjecthood, she works across a range of media including installation, moving image, sound, text and sculpture.
Her work has been featured in solo exhibitions at MASS MoCA, Pitzer College Art Galleries, REDCAT, Clockshop LA, Human Resources, 18th Street Arts Center, Visitor Welcome Center, LACE and Grand Central Art Center, and group exhibitions at The Mistake Room, Vincent Price Art Museum, The Museum of Latin American Art, and The San Diego Art Institute among others. Sarno’s work has been supported by grants from the California Arts Council, the California Community Foundation Fellowship for Visual Artists, the Foundation for Contemporary Art and the Lucas Artist Fellowship in Visual Arts at Montalvo Art Center.
