Atamira is a Māori contemporary dance company based in Aotearoa (New Zealand). On Friday, April 7 at 7 p.m., they will be performing Te Wheke, which calls forth The Octopus, a powerful, mythological symbol for Oceanic peoples, at the Culver Center of the Arts in downtown Riverside. The Te Wheke performers offer this class as a way for participants to deepen their understanding and experience with Māori contemporary dance, and with Te Ao Māori (Māori world view), before the show.

New Zealand contemporary dance evolved as a cross hybrid of techniques experienced by early New Zealand dancers training in New York in the 1980’s and 1990’s then returning to share these forms in our geo-political context. Atamira Dance Company emerged from this synthesis of styles, interwoven with a growing sense of de-colonial cultural revitalisation. Atamira Dance artists will share a format that moves the participants through a range of grounded, organic, fluid and expressive movement vocabulary that demonstrates the collaborative forces of multi-world views. The first part of class is physical warmup which would be typical of a New Zealand dance company. They then  share the specific movement and conceptual interplay of Te Ao Māori (the Māori world view) that is inherent in Te Wheke repertoire.
