Black Graduation was established at UC Riverside in 1999 as a special, culturally relevant graduation recognition event as a way to celebrate the academic accomplishments of students of African descent. The ceremony gives students an opportunity to celebrate their graduation with their families and friends; in addition to the UCR Commencement, students partake in this cultural celebration as way to honor their heritage through music, dance and an inclusion of their entire “village.”
