Please join us for the upcoming Edward A. Dickson Emeritus/a Lecture Talk Series. Each year three retired UCR faculty are awarded Edward A. Dickson Professorships to support their research, teaching, or public service activities. In the year following their awards, Dickson Professors give public presentations of their work sponsored jointly by the UCR Emeriti Association and Retirees’ Association.
George Haggerty is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of English at the University of California, Riverside. His books include Gothic Fiction/Gothic Form (1989); Unnatural Affections: Women and Fiction in the Later Eighteenth Century (1998); Men In Love: Masculinity and Sexuality in the Eighteenth Century (1999); Queer Gothic (2006); Horace Walpole’s Letters: Masculinity and Friendship in the Eighteenth-Century (2011); and Queer Friendship: Male Intimacy in the English Literary Tradition (2018). He has also edited (with Bonnie Zimmerman) Professions of Desire: Lesbian and Gay Studies in Literature (1995); Gay Histories and Cultures: An Encyclopedia (2000), Music and Sexuality in Britten: Selected Essays of Philip Brett (2006), and (with Molly McGarry) The Blackwell Companion to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Studies (2007). He is currently at work on The Many Lives of Horace Walpole.
In this presentation, George Haggerty will discuss the life and letters of Horace Walpole, the son of England's first Prime Minister, and the author of England's first Gothic novel: The Castle of Otranto.
