In recent years, Indigenous communities have been pressing upon universities to address tenuous/false claims to Indigeneity within their respective institutions. In response to these calls, universities have engaged in various kinds of initiatives, including commissioning reports on the topic of, “Indigenous identity fraud” and striking task forces/working groups to develop institutional policies and procedures aimed at verifying claims to Indigeneity. In 2022, McGill University commenced its work towards developing a more robust and equitable process for ensuring that positions and opportunities designated for Indigenous peoples are, indeed, taken up by Indigenous Peoples. In her presentation, Dr. Celeste Pedri-Spade, Associate Provost (Indigenous Initiatives) will provide insight into steps involved in policy development, challenges that exist within a university context, and key lessons learned, in the spirit of inspiring and supporting work happening elsewhere across Turtle Island.
