GSEA and The English Department present: Dr. Lashon Daley (SDSU)

Title: “Coming of (R)age: Charting Black Girl Lit Studies"

Abstract: In her current book project Coming of (R)age: Charting Black Girl Lit Studies, Dr. Lashon Daley argues that Black girls do not come of age in mediated representations of girlhood due to the ways in which the historic traumas of slavery, civil rights, and racial formation have adulterated how their age, rates of physical maturation, and social development are constructed and perceived. Rather, they come of (r)age. Through memory and imagining, embodied performances and (re)enactments, and digital composition and mapping, Dr. Daley discusses her framework for dismantling mediated representations that pin Black girls as culturally deviant.
