Michael C. Campbell, Ph.D., is an associate professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminology at the University of Denver. His research examines the social, historical and political forces that shape law and policy, especially those associated with mass incarceration. His work has been published in the American Journal of Sociology, Law and Society Review, Criminology, Punishment and Society and other sociological and criminological journals. His work has been acknowledged by the American Society of Criminology for its Best Article Award in 2017. His current work explores how political, institutional, socioeconomic, and criminological factors have shaped state-level criminal justice reforms in the 21st Century. This research aims to identify successful paths away from mass incarceration and toward criminal justice policies that improve public safety and reduce inequality.
