UC Riverside Department of Music presents:

Latin American Digital Music (EDM): Rhizomatic Identities, Post-Geographical Territories

Emilia Moscoso Borja

Through the lens of rhizomatic identities and post-geographical territories, this research highlights how Latin American EDM artists navigate and reshape their musical landscapes, reflecting a synthesis of cultural heritage, technological innovation, and global connectivity. The outcomes illuminate the transformative potential of digital music as a vehicle for identity formation and cultural expression in an increasingly interconnected world.

Latin American electronic music, electro folklore, Andean beats, Latin American digital music, digital and electronic folklore, even perhaps folktronics and ethnico-electronics, etc. Some of the labels that were created to describe the dynamic and multifaceted productions emerging from the region, rooted in the concept of rhizome which reflect the non-linear and interconnected nature of cultural influences and musical expressions in the digital age. Latin American artists increasingly draw from a wide array of sources, transcending traditional boundaries and hierarchies to create innovative soundscapes that challenge conventional notions of identity and genre.

Furthermore, this discussion will delve into the concept of post-geographical territories, where music is no longer confined to specific locations or cultural contexts. In this framework, digital platforms empower artists to reach global audiences while simultaneously engaging with local traditions and contemporary trends. This interplay facilitates a rich dialogue among diverse cultural narratives and fosters new forms of collaboration.
