About this Event
Encuentro de Música Oaxaqueña Conference: Raíces y Ramas
An interactive two-day music conference & workshop celebrating Oaxacan musical traditions. FREE & open to the public. Bring your instruments! Percussion instruments will be provided.
This event is FREE and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to register before October 10 so they will receive the sheet music via email by October 15. REGISTER HERE.
Organized by Dr. Xóchitl Chávez, associate professor of music at UCR, this free event is part of the annual Encuentros series, which has been showcasing Latin American musical heritage since 2005.
This symposium is a unique opportunity to witness the breadth and depth of Oaxacan musical traditions as they've evolved across diverse geographical contexts. By bringing together presenters from Oaxaca, North Carolina, New York, and various parts of California, we're showcasing how Oaxacan music-making practices have been preserved, adapted, and reimagined within different diasporic communities.
The event features an impressive lineup of presenters that reflects the wide-reaching nature of the Oaxacan diaspora:
Indigenous scholars and musicians from Oaxaca, Mexico
A delegation of Oaxacan parents and youth musicians from Greensboro, North Carolina
Oaxacan artist and researcher from New York
Musicians and community leaders from various Californian cities, representing local Oaxacan diasporic communities
Event highlights include:
Academic presentations on Indigenous Oaxacan musical traditions across different geographical contexts
A master class featuring a new composition by Mixteco composer Ruben Lugeas of Pasatono Orchestra
Recording sessions showcasing contemporary compositions by women Oaxacan composers and traditional Oaxacan funeral music, coinciding with Día de los Muertos
Bilingual panels on university admission and campus life for Indigenous and diasporic community members
"Baile Serrano," an open-air community presentation and dance showcasing newly learned and recorded music
The event showcases music from several Indigenous Oaxacan communities (Zapotec, Mixe, Mixteco, and Afro-Indigenous), demonstrating how these traditions have been maintained and transformed within different diasporic settings.
UCR Music Industry track students will gain hands-on experience by participating in the recording sessions, providing them with valuable skills and the opportunity to engage with diverse Oaxacan Indigenous musical traditions.
The symposium is free and open to students, faculty, staff, and the wider community, promoting inclusivity and accessibility to cultural education. This approach aligns with UC Riverside's mission as an HSI to serve as a resource for the entire community, particularly underrepresented groups.
