Talk with Jonathan Zimmerman (Berkowitz Professor of the History of Education, University of Pennsylvania)
About: "Over the past several years, free speech has been coded on our campuses as a "conservative" idea: it's something favored by white men, who use it to support racist speech and--not incidentally--to reinforce their own domination. Across American history, however, minorities have harnessed free speech to critique and challenge their oppression and marginalization. Looking backwards in history, this talk will highlight the radical role of free speech in promoting social justice across race, gender, and sexuality."
Sponsored by the Department of Sociology. Cosponsored by the Being Human initiative at the Center for Ideas and Society.
