Graphic Literature and Line Play

Workshop led by Rocío Pichón-Rivière (UCI)


 

This bilingual workshop is an invitation to play with lines on paper to tell stories combining words and imagery. No art skills required!

Participants will be guided through exercises to find play in line work and produce somatic landscapes (portraying how the body feels rather than how it looks). Somatic landscapes can be figurative or abstract. 

 

The premise of this workshop is that our bodies can express ideas through play, doodles, and rhythmic sequential art that would never have come up working with just words. We will explore how visual thinking can advance moving our hands and create a narrative through a brief sequence of images

 (or image descriptions, for those who want to write a sequential art script to develop with photography or video later on).

Rocío Pichon-Rivière is a scholar, artist, and educator. She is a philosopher by training and her scholarship proposes an intellectual history of marginalized vernacular thinkers and the role of alternative media in the dissemination of transformative ideas. She writes about Latinx American trans and queer feminist theory, comics, health humanities, critical phenomenology, and transformative justice. She is an assistant professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of California Irvine and founding co-director of the Graphic Narratives Research Cluster at UCI School of Humanities.

This workshop is part of the series of bilingual creative writing workshops facilitated by Iván Aguirre (Hispanic Studies Department, UCR), Elena Cardona (Soka University of America), and Paula Cucurella (Hispanic Studies Department, UCR). This workshop is hosted by the Hispanic Studies Department and made possible through a Chancellor’s Grant for Addressing Bias and Bigotry.
