UC Riverside Department of Music presents:

Lars Hoefs, São Paulo State University, Campinas (Universidade Estadual de Campinas), "Expressions of Brazilian Identity through the Voice of the Cello: Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras.”

Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras, composed during the years 1930-45, combine Brazilian popular and traditional musical practices with elements of J. S. Bach’s musical language.  Nos. 1 and 5 in the series, scored for the highly original ‘orchestra of cellos’, have proven to be among the most popular and recognizable of Latin American concert music and established the now-flourishing cello ensemble genre.  The cello was in fact Villa-Lobos’ first instrument, and the concept of Bachianas Brasileiras began with Villa-Lobos’ arrangements for cello and piano of Bach’s preludes and fugues.  Through idiomatic cello writing, the uncanny integration of neobaroque and Brazilian traditional musical styles, and an overwhelming popular success worldwide, Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras have become synonymous with the expression of Brazilian identity in the sphere of classical music.
