About this Event
This is the third event on the workshop series "Linguistic Justice & Health Equity", an event that gathers scholars from different areas to discuss interdisciplinary approaches to tackle language and its relation with health disparities. This time, Dr. Dalia Magaña from UC Merced will be giving a presentation on "Cancer is a Journey, not a Fight in Rural Latinas’ Health Narratives". Her work focuses on Spanish language communication in medical, educational, and social contexts. Her work on communication in healthcare aims to raise awareness about the role of language use and cultural competency in improving patient-centered healthcare with Spanish speakers. She has published on transcultural competency in doctor–patient interactions with a focus on interpersonal communication. She has also worked on how Spanish speakers conceptualize cancer in health narratives through their use of culturally-embedded metaphors. She is also interested in engaging Spanish language and applied linguistics pedagogy with language use in healthcare.
