Title: Flash Joule Heating for Synthesis, Remediation and Valorization

Abstract: Flash Joule heating will be described as a route to: new materials and upcycling in seconds; recovery of metals from electronic waste, ores and batteries; rare earth elements from coal fly ash and bauxite residue; upcycling of waste plastic and waste food to graphene or carbon nanotubes; upcycling of retired wind turbines and aircraft into silicon carbide or silicon carbide nanowires; soil remediation from heavy metals, toxic organics and PFAS contamination; the synthesis of carbon and vast arrays of inorganic materials in seconds; and lithium recovery from electronic waste and ores. Arrays of metals can be selectively separated in seconds by capitalizing upon the free energy of formation of the metal halides during the flash Joule heating process.  All of these processes are solvent and water-free. The kinetics of the reaction chemistry will be discussed based on the effects of electrical currents passing through materials. The flash Joule heating system can be built for $200 using a $120 arc welder and graphite rods.
