Pansori Korean Folk Opera Workshops

These special master classes will be an opportunity for you to experience live demonstration of classical Pansori repertoire such as Saranga (Love Song), Tokki Hwasang (Rabbit Song) and to learn the beginner-level of skills and phrases of traditional Korean vocal practices such as Pansori and Minyo which has been globally exposed through contemporary performance arts and K-pop music.

2021 California Arts Council Individual Artist Fellow, Melody H Sim (Shim) is an LA- based Pansori (traditional Korean opera) singer and the artistic director of KTYPR, a cultural and educational non-profit organization formed by Korean-Americans from Southern California. Melody began her Pansori training at the age of 15 from Jung Ok-hang who is the Korean Intangible Cultural Asset No. 5 Pansori ‘Sugungga.’ She continued her traditional music training at the National High School of Traditional Arts and received her BA in Korean Music at Chung-ang University. As an awardee of the Grand Prize at the 2nd Jongro Gugak Korean Classical Music Contest organized by the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, she performed for ‘Saturday Night’ in 2010 at National Gugak Center and for the TV show called Korean Traditional Music Concert at KBS1.
