#florencebayzseriesUC Riverside Department of Music presents:
Sound Imaginations: Audiovisual Immersion
Paulo C. Chagas
Sound Imaginations is an interdisciplinary project that I initiated between 2016 and 2019 as a Senior Fellow at the Center for Ideas and Society at the University of California, Riverside. The project blends sound studies scholarship with field research and artistic expression. Since 2020, the project has evolved to include the concept of audiovisual telematic immersion in collaboration with Brazilian flutist Cássia Carrascoza. Together, we have presented more than 60 virtual and in-person concerts and presentations across the United States, Brazil, and various countries in Europe and Asia. Our work culminated in the creation of the film Sound Imaginations: Telematic Immersion, which will premiere on November 9th at UCR ARTS.
This film invites audiences on an immersive journey through ambisonic soundscapes and 360-degree visuals, merging distant landscapes and intimate moments. The work offers a unique aesthetic, inviting audiences to “hear the invisible” and to feel the nearness of what is far away, challenging traditional perceptions of presence and absence in contemporary audiovisual art
