In conversation with Dr. Courtney R. Baker (English, UCR), award-winning scholar Dr. Pickens (Charles A. Dana Professor of English and Africana Studies at Bates College) discusses the state of poetry, disability studies, and Arab American and African American literatures along, their  overlapping projects, and the tools for conducting scholarship in these areas. Pickens is a professor at Bates College who has published widely in each of these fields. She is the author of the books Black Madness :: Mad Blackness (Duke University Press 2019) and New Body Politics: Narrating Black and Arab Identity in the United States (Routledge 2014). Her first poetry collection, What Had Happened Was, will debut in 2025 from Duke University Press.
