Title: Chinese Americans Experience Discrimination in Public Schools

Speaker: Charles Crabtree, Assistant Professor, Department of Government at Dartmouth University

Stereotypes about Asian Americans have deep roots in the U.S. education system. However, there is limited experimental evidence exploring the extent, nature, and origins of discrimination. Using two independently-conducted correspondence audits, Dr. Crabtree finds that Chinese Americans have, in important instances, faced more discrimination than other racial/ethnic minority groups in initial interactions with public school principals, especially in areas with more White and Republican- voting populations. The works suggests that the reach of racial/ethnic discrimination against Chinese Americans is broader and more systemic than previously realized.
