Sustainability Seminar Series: Environmental Justice in the Inland Region

Come to the Office of Sustainability's December Seminar Series. This month, we have invited the Center of Community Action and Environmental Justice to come and discuss the work that they do and how the campus community can become more involved. Our guest speaker is Gaby Mendez, Youth Organizer and Volunteer Coordinator for CCAEJ.

Talk Description: CCAEJ is working alongside communities to push for clean air policies such as the electrification of truck fleets and more investment in electric infrastructure to move us away from our reliance on fossil fuels. CCAEJ is also pushing for the retirement of old fossil fuel infrastructure, such as gas plants, and for the development of more local, clean, renewable energy.

At the same time, CCAEJ is working alongside communities for better land use policies. The inland region is one of the warehouse capitals of the world, and low-income communities of color are bearing the brunt for companies like Amazon and Wal-Mart to increase their profit margins. Warehouses are being built at record speed and next to our homes and schools. Laws are being rewritten and areas are being rezoned, against community will, to make these projects happen.

CCAEJ working alongside community through organizing impacted communities and students to actions, hearings, rallies, marches and meetings. Come learn how you can be involved.
