Dr. Sierra-Arévalo is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Texas at Austin and serves on the City of Austin’s Public Safety Commission. His research shows how danger and violence infuence police culture, ofcer practice, and social inequality. His frst book, for which this seminar is named, is under advance contract at Columbia University Press and his other writings and research have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, NPR, Vox, Slate, GQ, and the New Republic, among other outlets. He received his Ph.D. in Sociology from Yale University
