The Department of History invites you to The Eagle in Winter. Seasonality and Empire in the Roman World Presented by:  Professor Greg Woolf Ronald J. Mellor Chair of Ancient History at UCLA

The Roman Empire we imagine was a summer empire, built on a web of connections that carried goods, people and information from its various centers to far flung provinces and frontiers. But there was another empire, vaster, slower, and more atomized, a torpid empire in which power was retracted and consolidated. It is this annual fluctuation that Professor Greg Woolf will explore and map out.
