Menotti, Amahl and the Night Visitors:
Introduction, March & Shepherds' Dance
Bright Sheng/Brahms, Black Swan
(based on Brahms's Intermezzo Op. 118, No. 2)
Britten, Matinées Musicales
Dvořák, Symphony No. 8
conducted by Ruth Charloff
Join the Orchestra for Dvořák’s beloved Symphony No. 8—genial, exhilarating music full of lyrical melody and Czech dance rhythms. Also on the program: music from Menotti’s luminous, festive “Amahl and the Night Visitors;” Britten’s “Matinées Musicales," a witty orchestral spin on tunes from Rossini; and Bright Sheng’s “Black Swan,” a lush re-imagining of a Brahms Intermezzo originally composed for piano.
Our performance of Dvořák is dedicated to the memory of Anthony Ginter (1932-2024), conductor of the UCR Orchestra from 1977 to 1997. Professor Ginter, a fine violinist and conductor and a wide-ranging scholar of Czech music, felt particular affinity for Dvořák and performed his music frequently with the UCR Orchestra.
