UCR ARTS’ Fall Reception is this Saturday!
Join us at UCR ARTS Saturday, September 29, from 6-8 p.m. for our annual fall reception celebrating seven dynamic exhibitions currently on view at The California Museum of Photography and the Culver Center of the Arts! Enjoy fine art, snacks, complimentary beer, and mingle with the artists. This event is free and open to the public.
a Handful of Dust: from the Cosmic to the Domestic | July 7 - December 9, 2018
A speculative history of the 20th century, the exhibition is a visual journey through the imagery of dust from aerial reconnaissance, wartime destruction, and natural disasters, to urban decay, domestic dirt, and forensics, via abstraction and conceptual art.
Analogues: Paho Mann |July 7, 2018 - January 6, 2019
Using 3-D scanning technology to capture images of objects in his personal collections, Mann embraces the glitchiness of the consumer version of scanning software.
Bringing the War Home: World War I Through the Stereoscope | September 29, 2018 - January 27, 2019
Marking the centennial of Armistice, this exhibition explores the multifaceted ways in which World War I was both represented and consumed through stereoscopic photographic technologies in the twentieth century.
Collected | July 7, 2018 - July 28, 2019
Completing its first holistic reinstallation of its permanent collection gallery in over 20 years, “Collected” considers the concept of collecting. This exhibition examines the first photograph collectors, people in the 19th century who assembled images of loved ones or photographs of interest, and also features several modern collectors whose gifts helped to shape the California Museum of Photography’s collection.
Painting Architecture | September 1 - December 29, 2018
Inviting viewers to contemplate the distinctions between architecture and painting, “Painting Architecture” explores elements of architecture, and examines the tension between architecture's ties to function and paintings' rejection of practical usefulness.
Verso | July 7 - November 25, 2018
Exploring the often-unseen back side of photographs, this exhibition examines the indelible marks left on photographs by photographers, museums, and individuals, and considers what they reveal to us about the objects themselves.
Yunhee Min & Peter Tolkin: Red Carpet in C | August 18 - December 29, 2018
Conceived as performative architecture, this large fabric installation functions as both an object to be viewed and a space to be inhabited; a virtual translation of music into three-dimensions. Constructed of fabric and colored paper tubes, its soft, undulating parabolic shape is set in visual relief against the classical proportions, meter, and time signature of Culver Center of the Arts' historic atrium.
