UCR Department of Music
UCR Chamber Singers and Orchestra
Ruth Charloff, conductor
UCR Chamber Singers and Orchestra perform Haydn’s brilliant Mass in Time of War, a masterpiece that expresses a powerful intersection of religious belief and the urgency of Haydn's historical moment – the onslaught of Napolean’s army into Austria. All the narrative drama, joy and awe of the Catholic mass text mix with the anxiety of current events, impassioned pleas for peace, and distant sounds of cannon fire. The program includes Beethoven's Egmont Overture – also a deeply-felt response to the Napoleonic Wars.
