\nAmbre Dromgoole \n\nGospel Blues scholar\, Yale Divinity School and Insti
tute of Sacred Music \n\n“God Feeling”: On Black Girl Musicians and the San
ctified Church \n\nHannah Snavely\, coordinator \n\nWhen asked to reflect o
n her childhood accompanying Black pentecostal congregations in Detroit\, l
egendary jazz musician and composer Alice Coltrane said “the people in the
audience were so overcome by the spirit\, they weren’t singing anymore\; so
me were just walking around the church. Half of the choir had been carried
out.” While remembered for the innovative ways her syncretic spirituality i
nformed her compository voice\, few scholars recognize the specific ways th
at her childhood experiences accompanying Black pentecostal congregations i
nfluenced her theomusicological development. This presentation chronicles t
he experiences and innovations of teenage Black girl musicians who\, simila
r to Alice Coltrane\, navigated early 20th-century Black pentecostal reviva
 l circuits. \n \nApril 21\, 2021\nWednesday\, 12:00-12:50 P.M. P

ewhere: Itinerancy\, Intimacy\, and Performance in the Lives of Gospel Blue
 s Women\, 1915-1983\,” positions the friendships\, micro-interactions\, and
collaborations of an intimate circle of Black women gospel musicians (Sist
er Rosetta Tharpe\, Roxie Ann Moore\, Ernestine Washington\, Marie Knight)
as untilled sites worthy of critical Black feminist engagement\, sociohisto
 rical consideration\, and nuanced religious analysis.\n\nInformation: \nper
