UCR Orchestra: Southern Journeys: music from Mexico, Italy, and the south of France

Department of Music

UCR Orchestra
Southern Journeys: music from Mexico, Italy, and the south of France
Guest artist Flávio Apro, guitar
Ruth Charloff, conductor

Our special guest artist is Brazilian guitarist Flávio Apro, who will perform the great Concierto del Sur (“Concerto of the South”) by Mexican composer Manuel Ponce. The concerto is beloved by guitarists as one of the great 20th-century pieces for their instrument.  This evocative, tuneful piece was composed for, and championed by, the virtuoso Spanish guitarist Andrés Segovia. Also from Mexico is José Pablo Moncayo’s festive Huapango. A huapango is a fast, intricate dance style with complex cross rhythms, from the Huasteca region of Mexico. Moncayo’s joyous 1941 orchestral work weaves in three well-known songs from Veracruz. It quickly was embraced both in and out of Mexico and has been popular with audiences around the world.
L’Arlesienne (“The Girl from Arles”) was an 1872 play set in Provencal in the south of France, with expressive, lively music composed by Georges Bizet. UCR Orchestra will perform Suite No. 1. Also on the program is the famously witty Overture from Rossini’s best-known comic opera, The Barber of Seville
