Dramaturg’s Note:
Water by the Spoonful by Quiara Alegría Hudes is a moving work that tackles how dissonance feels, what it means to be family, and how to deal with addiction. Dissonance is the joining of disharmonious elements; like jazz, life is not a clear-cut path but full of disharmonious elements, and the messily put together pieces make a story grand. Quiara Hudes’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play follows the Ortiz family through grief and addiction. We see how family can be ripped apart yet also brought closer together by tragedy. During our own time coping with the ramifications of coronavirus, the play reminds us of the importance of support systems from our family and friends to strangers on the internet. We are all connected through our humanity with our pain, and even our bad decisions, as we consider the lengths we will go to remedy our past.
