UNCAGED: HERO FOR HIGHER is a digitally remixed, visually dynamic, gallery comic-installation by critically acclaimed graphic arts duo Black Kirby. Black Kirby is Stacey Robinson (UIUC Assistant Professor of Graphic Design and Illustration) and John Jennings (UCR Professor of Media and Cultural Studies). UNCAGED will examine the Marvel Comics character Luke Cage in his various formal expressions since his creation in 1972. The exhibition will also unpack the multiple connotations of Luke Cage in media culture as an index for the many tensions regarding the black body and the sometimes disruptive meanings projected upon it.
From preacher’s son, to prisoner, to protector of Harlem; Luke Cage and his world will be unleashed!
Image courtesy of the artists, based on a sketch by Denys Cowan, colors and art direction by Black Kirby. Black Kirby's work appears in tandem with Harlem's superstar clothing designer D.W. of Pop's Barbershop. This exhibition is co-sponsored by the Piranha Jones Memorial Foundation.
